David Cox
David Cox, beloved husband of Iris Cox, died unexpectedly on Monday, January 20, 2025 at his home in Charlottesville, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Sherman Cox and Sybil (Jones) Cox, and younger brother George Cox who died in 2020. David is survived by his wife, and stepchildren Gemma (Cohen) DeGioia and Henry Cohen; and siblings Sybil ‘Tina’ Cox (Boston, MA), Steven Cox (Fall River MA) and Leslie Cox (Baltimore, MD) as well as a niece, nephews, aunts and cousins.
Born June 15, 1944 in Boston, Massachusetts, David spent some of his childhood in Europe post-World War II due to his father's military service. David was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam in the 1960s. After serving an additional year in Wiesbaden, Germany, he decided to continue living in Germany and enjoy European life. David lived in Germany for many years and became fluent in both German and French. During this time he worked as a class ring salesman throughout Europe and also in a number of other trade and sales jobs.
David returned to the United States in the 1980s and worked in landscaping and construction mostly throughout New England, but also with stops in California and New Mexico. David was restless and searching the world to find a place to call home. In 1999 he met Iris, and they were married the same year in Crozet, Virginia. Less than a year later Iris and David both became Christians, and David's faith in Jesus remained an integral part of his life. In 2013, alongside Habitat for Humanity David helped to build a home for the family in Charlottesville, VA.
At the time of his death, David was retired from construction work and volunteer work with the local rescue squad. His sudden death leaves a hole in our hearts, and we will miss him dearly.
A private memorial will be held January 25, 2025, with interment of ashes in the spring to be announced.
