Betty Jane Cannon

May 3, 1943 - January 27, 2026

Betty Jane Gatrell Middleton Cannon was born May 3, 1943, in Sharpsburg, Maryland to Louise (Henson) and John Gatrell Sr. She entered eternal rest on January 27, 2026, in Unionville, Virginia, at age 82. Betty was a kind and selfless soul, always putting others before herself. She was a faithful member of Rhoadesville Baptist Church since joining in 1984. Betty enjoyed attending church every Sunday with her sister-in-law Linda. In her younger years, Betty enjoyed travelling and had visited all but 2 of the United States, leaving her with many stories to tell.

Betty also loved hosting family and friends for large meals that were always homemade with love. She also believed a good meal was never complete without dessert, and there were always many options to choose from. Betty enjoyed tending to her house plants, playing a nice competitive card game, and spoiling her grandchildren who affectionately called her Nanny. She was a vibrant soul, full of life and laughter, and will be dearly missed.

Betty is survived by sons Steve Middleton and wife Sue, Carl Middleton Jr. and wife Kim, Rodney Middleton and wife Valerie; siblings Nancy Gatrell, Gregory Gatrell, Ralph (Ray) Gatrell, and Gene Gatrell; sisters and brother-in-law Linda Lunsford (Alan), Jane Middleton, Pat Middleton, and David Middleton; grandchildren Steve Middleton Jr., John Middleton, Samantha Pasztor (Nat), Sarah Middleton, Ashlee Middleton (Robert); great grandchildren Raquel and Madison; and many other beloved family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Carl Middleton Sr., second husband Lonnie Cannon; siblings Dottie Shoemaker, Sissy Robinson, Leroy Gatrell, Eddie Gatrell, and Dickie Gatrell; and grandson Jack Middleton.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, February 2, 2026, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange. Burial will follow at a later date due to weather conditions. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Rhoadesville Baptist Church in Betty’s honor.
