Hugh Ross Coates

Hugh Ross Coates, 94 of Madison, Va., passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at his home. He was born on August 18, 1931 to the late William Edward Coates and Lucy Mildred Covington Coates. He was also preceded in death by his son, H. R. Coates, Jr.; siblings, Virginia “Sis” Brown, James Coates, Robert Coates, Lucy Mildred Matthews, Joseph Coates, Charlie Coates, Clayton Coates, Delma Coates, and John Coates.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Rosalind Clore Coates; daughter, Rebecca Pierce (Brian), Ken Coates (Temple), Keith Coates (Gina); sister, Sallie Francis Thornhill; brother, Paul Coates; nine grandchildren, Morgan, Chad, Jim, Logan, Tylee, Ericka, Matt, Ben, Grace; five great-grandchildren, Luna, Graylynn, Ellabelle, Calum, and Valentina.
Hugh and Rosalind worked tirelessly to create a beautiful home and give their family, and many others, unconditional love and support. Hugh, ‘Pop’, fiercely loved his family and was happiest when everyone was together in Haywood. He loved his work, but even more loved helping anyone who needed it, expecting nothing in return. Hugh worked at Mountain View Chevrolet for many years before moving to the bus shop for Madison County schools, where he retired. He stayed busy in his shop at home working (and entertaining) lots of friends, including the Friday night crew.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at Mt. Carmel Church with Pastor Keith Wagner officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service, from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the church.
