Aaron Darnell Houchens, Sr., 61, fondly loved and known as “Poogie, Donnie & Joe,” entered eternal rest on the afternoon of November 14, 2023.

Aaron was born on May 2, 1962, the son of the late John William Houchens and Alberta Hunter Houchens. In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Tammy Marie Clements, his brother, Timothy Maurice Houchens, and sister, Thelma Louise Hunter.

Aaron attended Louisa County Public Schools and was self-employed specializing in flooring installation. His flooring business was known as Houchens Floor Covering. Through his business, he met numerous people, establishing long-lasting clients and friendships. He enjoyed his family and loved meeting at his family home for Sunday breakfast and dinners. He loved to fish, play softball, and he made friends everywhere he went. He loved going to the drag strip. Whether it was Sumerduck Dragway, Custom T’s Motorsport Park or Virginia Motorsports Park, he was there with his cars and friends in tow. His love for building and racing cars was enormous. He took pride in getting his cars ready to make a pass down the strip.

Aaron accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He was baptized and joined Rising Sun Baptist Church. He knew to know and love the Lord was to know the Lord’s word.

Left to cherish sweet memories are his mother, Alberta Hunter Houchens; three sons, Aaron, Jr., Jeffrey (Lauren) and Morgan; three daughters, Heather, Gabrielle (Brianna) and LaTasha; five brothers, George, Lawrence (Lisa), John O'Dell (Vandelia), Venfert and Reggie; four sisters, Patricia Syrkes, Gladys Coles (Clifton), Connie Coles (Michael), and Cynthia Walker; two uncles, James and Walter (Alice), three aunts, Frances Hunter, Julia Jackson and Bertha Davis Houchens; fifteen grandchildren, Tameeka, Amiyah, Taylah, Jeffrey, Jr., Cheyenne, Landen, Camden, Quincy, Nevaeh, Makaylee, Camryn, Myiah, Melody, Deion and Davi; a group of friends and extended family that he loved as brothers, Jeffrey “BoDean” Short, Richard Taylor, Kenny “Cowboy” Taylor, Wayne “Moe” Henson, Richard “Tutus” Christopher, Charles “Charlie Boy” Smart, Darrell Morton, Patrick Pendergrass, Randy Neagle, Welford ‘PeeWee’ Smith, Allen “Bones” Taylor, and Ronnie “Bigfoot” Wells; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. with a viewing at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Rising Sun Baptist Church located at 6829 Fredericks Hall Road, Mineral, VA, with Rev. Walter Pleasants officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Grove Memorial Cemetery. A repast will be held at the family home on Houchens Road in Mineral.
