Akston Kurt Sellers

February 4, 2014 - November 21, 2023

Akston Kurt Sellers passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

Akston was a vibrant and vivacious boy with a tender soul. He loved the outdoors and having a plan for the day. His perfect day would include a family adventure, a play date with friends, and his favorite foods. He never got sick of pretzels, pickles, honeydew melon, or BLT sandwiches. He was so fun to watch when he opened gifts because every gift was “the best gift ever!” He was grateful and kind. It wasn’t uncommon to find a homemade breakfast or handwritten card he’d worked on in the morning hours before anyone else was awake. Every day was a new opportunity for fun and excitement. He loved the snow, riding his bike, climbing trees, and shooting his BB gun. Until he was diagnosed with cerebral ALD, he excelled at every physical challenge he embarked on. He played soccer for the Fauquier and Fluvanna soccer teams, did gymnastics, and was on the Lake Monticello swim team. He also looked forward to participating weekly in his homeschool co-op and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He cared deeply for his siblings and rejoiced in his new twin brother and sister that were born this year.

Above all, Akston was and is a child of God and was a valiant fighter during his last year of life making him a hero in the eyes of all who knew the depth of his struggles. As he slowly lost his ability to see, walk, and talk, Akston pressed forward “always persevering” and finding things to be grateful for. He often turned his disappointments and sadness into prayers for other little boys suffering from his same condition and thanking God for every moment of joy he had in his day. He truly had strength and wisdom far beyond his years and left all who knew him inspired to live life intentionally and with joy.

He leaves behind his parents, Nathaniel and Kristen; sisters, Ember and Esther; brothers, Benson, Cole, and Wesley; both sets of grandparents, two great grandmothers and a great grandfather; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins—all of which love him deeply and will miss him so much.

In lieu of flowers, please considering donating to ALD Alliance, a non-profit devoted to research into this rare disease as well as advocacy for early detection newborn screenings that can save lives.
