Born November 28, 1931, in Orange, Virginia, he was the son of the late Rachel Mallory and James Lewis May, Sr.. He was married 2 July 1954 at North Pamunkey Baptist Church to Lucy Henry. Before her death, they celebrated their 63rd anniversary. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Eugene, Myrtle Mundy, Nellie Mouberry, Janice Miller, David, and Roy May.
Archie was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He enjoyed playing baseball and softball; fishing, hunting miracles (morels), all dogs; and setting up model train layouts for his grandsons. He loved history and took his daughter to many of the state’s historical sites as well as annual trips to the Smithsonian Institute. He was a supervisor at VMP for many years until the plant closed.
Archie is survived by his daughter Cindy and her husband Howard Arthur, his grandchildren David B. and Peter Arthur, all of Amherst, Va, and Michael Arthur and wife Sabrina Winslow of Chesapeake, Virginia. He is also survived by one brother, J. Lewis May and wife Joan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
We would like to express our appreciation to Jody Mouberry who was more a son than a nephew to him as he assisted him with many chores, he was no longer able to do. His household helper, Donna, was such a blessing to him, preparing meals he enjoyed, running errands for and with him, and becoming a dear friend. Tom Landis was a key part of Archie’s team. We will always be grateful for all you did for Archie.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., July 2, 2024, at Graham Cemetery in Orange, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to your favorite dog rescue or shelter.
