Judy Irene Lang Scruggs
Judy Irene Lang Scruggs was born on January 17, 1945 to Raymond Perry Lang and Gladys Pugh Lang. She passed away on September 14, 2023. Survivors include: 2 sisters, Peggy Howdyshell and her husband, Dr. Larry Howdyshell of Roanoke, VA and Vicki Miller and her husband, Brian of Charlottesville, VA and 2 adored nieces, Beth Rowlett and her husband, Dr. Taylor Rowlett, of Signal Mountain, TN, and their children, Kaela, Harrison, Bella and Jack, and Andrea Kreskowski and her husband, Mark, of Roanoke, VA and their daughter, Gwen, a step-daughter, Dr. Katherine Scruggs and her husband, Pete Smith of Pittsburg, PA, a step-granddaughter, Kristina Scruggs, 2 step-grandsons, Patrick Scruggs and his wife Nicole of Richmond, VA and Wyatt Smith of Pittsburgh, PA. Judy was pre-deceased by her parents Raymond and Gladys Lang, her beloved husband of 46 years, Randy Scruggs, a step-son Rick Scruggs and a sister-in-law, Betty Lou Scruggs.
Judy graduated from Longwood College with a BS in Elementary Education, and did graduate work at UVA. Judy was a teacher for 33 years, completing her teaching career at Clark and Venable Elementary Schools in Charlottesville, VA. Along with teaching, Judy had a great love of music. In her younger years she sang solos or accompanied at many wedding and funerals. She was also an avid fan of UVA Women's Basketball, Judy was a charter member of VA Alpha Upsilon and the Doe Club of Lodge #389.
Judy belonged to University Baptist Church for 62 years. While there, she sang in the Sanctuary Choir and accompanied and led various children's choirs, taught Sunday School and was a Deacon. Later, Judy joined Aldersgate United Methodist Church and she enjoyed participating in the senior adult activities there with a warm and welcoming congregation. Judy was passionate about her faith, her family and her friends. Many people have been touched by her faithful writing of cards with personal notes included.
