Carol Ann Hendrix
Carol Ann Hendrix, 89, of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024. Carol was born on July 15, 1935 in Kansas City, Kansas, to the late Chester and Alice Harshbarger. Carol was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband Cole Hendrix. Carol graduated from Argentine High School in 1953, and graduated from the University of Kansas, with a degree in Elementary Education, in 1957. Carol taught for one year before beginning her family with Cole. As her children grew older Carol worked as a travel agent for a local travel agency before accepting a position as an administrative assistant at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, a career that she loved and held from 1984 until she retired in 2001. Her roles of mother and grandmother were the two roles that Carol most cherished in life. Carol delighted in raising three active boys, and all that went with it- frequent trips to the drug store to buy baseball cards, attending hundreds of little league football, baseball and basketball games, and spending many of her birthdays at the zoo- her boys believing that what other way would anyone want to spend a birthday? Carol loved her grandchildren dearly, and initiated something called a “special day,” in which she would spend an entire day, once a year, with each grandchild. These days consisted of lunch out, an activity (e..g, miniature golf), a matinee, shopping for a gift of some sort, and then dinner out. Her grandchildren adored her, and these days, as did she. Carol had many friends during lifetime, but those she held most dearest were Barbara Evans, Janet Joseph, Jane Rall, Barbara Reed, Sally Wright and Pat Widhalm. Carol was an avid fan of both UVa and KU’s football and basketball teams. She loved spending time at the Outer Banks with both family and friends, and spent many hours attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and musical events. She volunteered at The Virginia Discovery Museum, located on the downtown mall in Charlottesville, for many years. Carol adored her dog Molly, a vocal Havanese rescue,in the last years of her life. Carol is survived by her sons Stephen (Kerry) Hendrix, Scott (Vicki) Hendrix, and Mark (Stevan) Hendrix. She is also survived by her grandchildren Zach (Amanda), Abby (Grant Pollock), Jake (Elyssa), Emma, Satchel and Lara Hendrix. She is also survived by her 3 great grandchildren Owen and Camden Hendrix, and Harvey Hendrix. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA (https://caspca.org/give/make-a-tribute-gift/), the Virginia Discovery Museum (https:://vadm.org/donate), or the Equus Foundation (https://equusfoundation.org/give/donate-form.php).
