Charlene Moonen
Charlene Moonen, 83, of Orange, Virginia, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2023 at Culpeper Hospital. Charlene was born October 4, 1940 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and traveled throughout the United States and the Philippines before making Orange, Virginia, her home.
Charlene will be remembered as a caring person who had a gift for helping people and making a profound difference in their lives. One of her greatest accomplishments was her recovery. She had 48 years sobriety. Charlene devoted her life to helping others with substance use disorders. She was active in AA, and in her professional life she worked as a substance use disorder counselor. Most recently, she managed the Women’s Alternatives program in Culpeper. Charlene touched the lives of many friends, coworkers, and clients.
Charlene is preceded in death by her father and mother, James and Ida Moonen; her sister, Carolyn Kay “Sissy” Rodgers; and two of her three children, Darlene Kay Burcham and Gary Wayne Sorrells. She is survived by her son, Jimmy Clayton Sorrells; grandson, James Lee Sorrells; her nephew and his wife, David and Charlotte Rodgers; as well as many extended family members whom she loved dearly.
Her family and friends would like to thank the staff at Dogwood Village and the nursing staff at Culpeper Hospital for their care and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange, Virginia. We would be honored for you to come and share your memories of and stories about Charlene.
