- January 4, 2024

Claude M. Herring, aged 84, passed away on January 4th, 2024 in his home in Ruckersville, Virginia.

Born on May 4th 1939, in Albemarle County, Virginia, one of his first jobs was driving a Greene County public school bus at the age of 15, which created a long-lasting influence on the county’s students.

An exceptionally hard worker, Claude was employed with Sperry Marine Corporation for 20+ years in addition to General Electric for 20+ years before retiring in 1999, in which he spent many happy hours farming in the garden at his house, spending time with friends and family, cheering for his beloved UVA basketball team, and participating in local car shows with his prized 1965 Mustang.

Claude was a volunteer firefighter for 30+ years in the Greene county Fire Department. He was a founding member of the Greene Country Rescue Squad, and served as a Planning Commissioner for 14 years in Greene. He was a proud member of Spring Hill Baptist Church for 58 years for which he was a Deacon as well as a Trustee.

Claude brought laughter and joy to any he spoke to, always loving a conversation with someone new. To many he was known as the Candy Man, offering up a wide selection of sweets to anyone and everyone nearby.

Survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dot Herring, his sons, Dale Herring and his wife Sue, their children Christian Herring (wife Amanda), Casey Jackson (husband Major, children Avery and Tyler) and Corey Herring; and Anthony Herring, his daughter Megan O’Malley (husband Mike); his nephew, David Wood; sisters-in-law Jeannette Harlow and Joyce Morris; adopted family Caleb Deane, and numerous friends.

Preceded in death by his parents Rosa and Robert Herring and numerous relatives.

Thank you to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Medical Services, for their professionalism and dedication during our time of need. Thank you to all of those who took part in caring for him during his time of need. We appreciate you.
