Dorothy "Dot" Mahanes
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
2 Timothy 4:7-8
Our adoring mother Dorothy “ Dot” Mahanes , age 76, of Charlottesville, VA, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 5, 2023 after battling with kidney and heart failure.
Dorothy was born February 6, 1947 in Lynchburg, VA. She was the daughter of the late Tritus Franklin Watson and Helen Woodie Watson. Her family eventually settled in Charlottesville, VA where she graduated from Albemarle High School, and then attended Radford College. At the age of 29, she married the late Randolph Winfred Mahanes, who was working for her father when they met. Three years later, they were blessed with the arrival of their first daughter, Kimberly Lynn Mahanes. Two short years later, they were surprised by the arrival of twins, Karen Beth Mahanes and Scott Randolph Mahanes. Not only was she a devoted wife and mother, she also worked hard as an accountant for the University of Virginia School of Medicine. As her children grew up and started having children of their own, her name changed to “Nana”, as she embraced the role of grandmother with joy!
Dorothy was a faithful woman who loved the Lord, and accepted Him as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She struggled with her health at the end of her life, but wherever she found herself receiving care she always made many friends. She found purpose for her life in cultivating these friendships and joyfully sharing the Good News of the Gospel! She cherished many of these friendships throughout her life.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 29 years Randolph Winfred Mahanes. She is survived by her three children, Kimberly Mahanes Milleson and her husband Mark, Karen Mahanes Tarrant and her husband William, Scott Randolph Mahanes and his wife Melissa; her seven grandchildren, Ethan Milleson, Emmalynn Milleson, Ella Milleson, Aaron Mahanes, Leah Mahanes, Abigail Mahanes and Miriam Mahanes.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday July 17, 2023 at First Baptist Church Park Street, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville VA 22902, with Pastor Joel Jenkins officiating. Burial at Holly Memorial Gardens with a reception following at First Baptist Church Park Street. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Sunday, July 16, 2023 at the Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville VA, 22903.
As we, friends and family, gather to celebrate the life of Dorothy, we are reminded of the many ways she touched our lives and the lives of those around her. Her kindness, generosity, and sense of humor will be greatly missed, but the memories we have of her will remain with us always.
