Dorsey William Shifflett

Dorsey William Shifflett, DW, 90 of Madison, VA passed away peacefully at Autumn Care on Monday, May 13, 2024. Dorsey was born on May 10, 1934 to George Shifflett and Bertha (Tibby) Snow Shifflett. He was proceeded in death by many siblings, his wife Dora Lamb Shifflett and two of daughters: Doris Ann Shifflett and Sandra Kay Lillard. He is survived by his son: David Earl Shifflett and wife Judith, his daughter: Patty Ann Rogers, grandchildren: Jennifer Evans and husband Jesse, Tommy Lillard, James Lillard, Ashley Childress and husband Casey, and Samantha Rogers along with seven great grandchildren: Christopher, Peter, Juliana, Isabella, Milo, Jacob and Asher.

Dorsey was a farmer for all of his life. He grew up helping his father farm and learned to live off of the land by planting, growing, harvesting, hunting and caring for animals. He was a dairy farmer when his children were young. By the time his grandchildren were being born he was raising lambs. He was a devoted husband to his wife and loving father to his children. He had a special love and relationship with each grandchild. Becoming a great grandfather was such a joy for him!

Dorsey was known for his unbelievable musical talent, although he was never formally trained, he could pick up any stringed instrument and play it with passion. He played in bluegrass bands over the years and passed his love of music onto his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. After a stroke took away his ability to play he loved listening to his great grandchildren play for him.

Dorsey was a salt of the earth kind of man. He had many lifelong friends who were like family. He loved deeply, laughed freely and would help anyone he could. His legacy of love, friendship, hard work and musical aptitude will live on through his family.

A graveside service will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens at 1:00 on Thursday, May 16, 2024. Preddys of Orange will be handling all funeral arrangements.
