Dr. Seymour "Sy" Rabinowitz

March 18, 1932 - March 22, 2025

Dr. Seymour "Sy" Rabinowitz passed away peacefully, on March 22, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on March 18th, 1932, to Lithuanian immigrants Morris and Sophie Rabinowitz, Sy grew up in Hartford, Ct. as the eldest of four siblings. He earned scholarships to college and medical school, graduating from Harvard Medical School in 1958. While in medical school he met his wife, Marian, and they began their life together, marrying on June 24, 1956. Their daughter, Karen, was born the next year. After finishing medical school, the growing family moved from Boston to Rochester, NY, where Sy completed his psychiatry residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, and where their son, Michael, was born. The family later relocated to Washington, D.C., where Sy worked for the Public Health Service, launched a private practice career as a psychoanalyst, and where their third child, Paul, was born. During this time he also traveled to India with the Peace Corp. That experience was a memorable one for him. In 1969, Sy moved with his family to Charlottesville, VA, where he joined the faculty at the University of Virginia Medical School. While he continued to enjoy a connection with the university, Sy decided to continue his private practice and passion for helping people as a psychoanalyst. Aside from his career, Sy and Marian enjoyed playing tennis, remaining competitive players into their 70s. They also shared a love of the outdoors; hiking, traveling and enjoying nature. At home Sy often was found reading philosophy and listening to classical music. He was known for his quiet wisdom, sharp intellect, and a wry sense of humor that remained with him until the end. He is survived by his wife, Marian, his children Karen Mizrach, Paul Rabinowitz, and Michael Rabinowitz (partner Julia Carr); his grandchildren, Daniel Mizrach (Annette), Jonathan Mizrach (Erin Snider), Jack Rabinowitz, and Ivan Rabinowitz; his great-grandson Elliott Mizrach, and his beloved sister Shirley Goldstein. He was preceded in death by siblings Gloria and Aaron. Sy will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy as a compassionate physician, an outstanding athlete, and a devoted family man will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many patients whose lives he touched. We are forever grateful to the caregivers who helped him the last few years of his life. There will be a small graveside service, at Hebrew Cemetery on 1st St. S., on March 30th, at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Parkinson’s organization of your choice.
