Edward Moore Hughes
Edward Moore Hughes, formerly of Madison, VA, and recently a resident of Ranson Ridge Assisted Living in Huntersville, NC, died on January 7, 2024, at the age of 89.
He was born in Charlottesville, VA on September 16, 1934, the son of Merideth N. Hughes and Louise Thomas Hughes. He grew up in Waynesboro, VA. He attended Waynesboro Public Schools and VPI. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany from 1954 to 1956. He graduated from the School of Bank Management of the Virginia- Maryland Bankers School at the University of Virginia.
Ed married Anne Golladay on June 15, 1957. They had two sons, Michael Edward and Bruce Wray Hughes.
Ed was a well-liked and respected banker for 32 years. He retired as Vice President of the Madison branch of the Second National Bank of Culpeper in 1992 to a small farm in Madison County. His hobbies were reading, hunting, fishing and farming. He was a member of the Madison United Methodist Church, the Kemper Fry Strother Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Shriners and the Lynn Banks Masonic Lodge where he was 32nd Degree Mason.
He was preceded in death by Anne his wife of 63 years, his son Michael, his parents and his two brothers (Stephens and Francis Hughes). He is survived by his son Dr. Bruce Hughes and his wife, Paula Reynolds Hughes, of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren, Annaliese Louise Hughes of Charleston, SC and Austin Thomas Hughes of Charlotte, NC.
The funeral service will be held at Preddy Funeral Home, Route 230, 59 Edgewood School Lane, Madison, VA at 11:00 am on Monday, January 15, officiated by Rev. Elizabeth Petry. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service from 10-11 am. Private interment will be beside his wife and son at Rose Park Rapidan Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rose Park United Methodist Church fund to restore the sanctuary after fire damage: Rose Park United Methodist Church, 318 Shelby Rd, Madison VA 22727.
