Elaine Hughes

March 21, 1934 - January 2, 2024

Elaine, Elizabeth Hughes, fondly known as “Evelyn”, joined her heavenly father on January 2, 2024, at the age of 89. She was born on March 21, 1934, in Louisa County, Virginia, to the late Helen Inez Winston and Joseph Ted Winston. At an early age, Elaine joined and was baptized at Foster Creek Baptist Church in Louisa, Virginia, where she actively participated as a choir member. Excelling academically, she graduated with honor roll merits from Louisa Training School.

In the early years of her marriage to the late Robert Chandler Hughes, the couple established residency in Keswick, VA. Elaine became a dedicated Union Run Baptist Church member, serving on the Senior Usher Board.

Later in life, the family moved to Charlottesville as her husband’s health started to decline. In Charlottesville, Elaine attended Zion Union Baptist Church.

Her professional journey included providing private domestic and nanny services to various households in the Greater Charlottesville area. Her dedication extended to various events at the Keswick Hunt Club, where her warmth and hospitality left a lasting impression.

As an avid reader, Elaine enjoyed reading her bible, her collection of nonfiction literature and The Daily Progress which kept her informed on current events. She was a passionate sports enthusiast, particularly devoted to football and basketball. Never would she miss a televised UVA or VA Tech game. Moreover, she relished watching all NFL games, being a dedicated fan of the Washington Commanders, while the Dallas Cowboys held a close second place in her favorites. Her joy stemmed from the thrill of a good competition.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Helen Inez Winston and Joseph Ted Winston, and her husband, Robert Chandler Hughes. Also preceding her death were her brothers, John and Edmond Winston, and her sisters, Josephine Burrus, Bertha T. Key, and Helen L. Baltimore.

She is survived by her children, Joseph A. Hughes and his wife, Bobbinette Hughes of Charlottesville, VA, Mary Ann Dyce and her husband, Leo. A. Dyce, Jr of Palmyra, VA; Queena V. Hughes-Thompson and her husband, Harry J. Thompson of Herndon, VA; and Marlon Chandler Hughes and his wife, Michelle Hughes of Aldie, VA. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Jones of Richmond, VA and her grandchildren Megan Perry and her husband, Jamon Perry of Coral Gables, FL; Jonathan Hughes and his fiancé Alyssa Edgerton of Aldie, VA; Vanessa Dyce and her fiancé Ronnie Smith of Oakland, CA; Christian Hughes and his wife Mallory Hughes of Charlotte, NC; Cassidy Dyce of Seattle, WA; Jordan Maclin of Alexandria, VA and Ashley and Bryce Hughes of Aldie, Va.

As for her great-grandchildren, she is survived by Logan Perry and Joseph A. Hughes II.

Elaine is further survived by her aunts, Eva Hall and Inez Thurston. As well as her nieces and nephews: Gloria Green, Pat Russell, Rosemary Hughes, Cynthia Winston-Jones, Samuel T. Baltimore, Jr., Anthony Baltimore, Charlene Baltimore, Darlene Lewis, Nicole Winston, Edwin Smithers, and Everett Smithers. Additionally, her sisters-in-law Vivian Winston and Carolyn Winston, along with close family friends Patricia Cook, Florence White, Bessie Williams and Joyce Johnson and many other extended family members, including great-nieces, nephews, and close friends.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 12:00 pm at Union Run Baptist Church, 3220 Keswick Road, Keswick, VA, 29947. Interment immediately follows at Union Run Baptist Church cemetery, with visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Flowers and cards may be received until 4:00 pm on January 11,2024, by Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 201 North 1st Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
