Frederick Hillman "Hill" Shiner

November 26, 1938 - March 12, 2024

Frederick Hillman (Hill) Shiner of Fork Union, Virginia died at home on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 after a lengthy illness.

Born November 26, 1938, in Petersburg, Virginia, he was the third son of H.H. Shiner Sr. and Mary Mildred Farley Shiner. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers H.H. Shiner Jr., and Dr. J.W. Shiner, grandson D.J. Crawford and stepdaughter Anne B. Jacobs.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Gayle Hollingsworth Shiner, sons Doug (Tammy), Mike (Elsa) and David (Karen); stepdaughter Kelly O. Crawford, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and various cousins, nieces and nephews.

Hill graduated from Petersburg High School (Class of ’57) and VPI Corp of Cadets L Co 62 (Class of ’63) where he earned a BS & BA. He also graduated from Virginia State University where he earned a masters in Industrial Education. He served in the U.S. Army from July ’63 to December ’66 as a first lieutenant in Germany. He was also an active volunteer fireman with Fork Union Volunteer Fire Department, Company 2, for many years.

He taught woodworking and cabinet making in Great Bridge, Petersburg, Hopewell and at Fluvanna County High School, retiring in 2004 (he used to say ‘I went out the door in 2004’). At that time, he opened his workshop from home, “Pieces of Wood” and was in his glory working there.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at the Fluvanna County High School auditorium from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Fluvanna County High School Athletic Fund or the Fork Union Volunteer Fire Department.

We wish to thank the many friends who visited and called Hill. A special thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their care and compassion to our family, with extra special thanks to Jill, Liz, Desmond and Oliesa.
