Joyce M. Gentry

Joyce M Gentry, born January 29, 1937, died on November 30, 2023.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and her daughter-in-law, Gail Gentry. She is survived by her son, Charles Gentry; daughter, Roberta Gentry (Chuck) of Midlothian; and her sister, Janet Lunsford (Nelson). She is also survived by three grandchildren (William Smith, Nicholas Gentry, and Kate Musselman) and three great-grandchildren.

Joyce grew up in Halifax County before attending college at Averett and Bluefield. After college, she married and moved to Doswell, Virginia. While living at the Meadow, she was a member of Concord Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Ashland. During this time, she was employed as a secretary in Richmond City Public Schools. In 1981, she returned to Charlottesville and worked at Church of Our Savior and JABA. She was a member of First Baptist Church. In 2021, she and Bobby moved to Brookdale Assisted Living in Midlothian.

Joyce will be remembered as a person who always shared her table and her heart with others. At work, she would frequently receive phone calls from a person in need. In addition to helping them professionally, she frequently responded with a bag of groceries, a home cooked meal, some money, and a load of wood. She never met a stranger and cherished having her family and friends over for dinner and loved sharing fresh vegetables out of her garden. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Brookdale Midlothian and James River Hospice.

A visitation will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 10 am, with a funeral service to follow at 11 am at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 201 1st St. North, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Following the funeral, a graveside service will take place at Riverview Cemetery, 1701 Chesapeake St, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Condolences and memories may be shared on the tribute wall.
