When Knowing Matters...
John Carson Baker 94 of Virginia Beach passed away surrounded by his family Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at the University of Virginia Hospital. He was the son of the late Carson Daniel Baker and Golda Azilla Wean Baker. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Juanita Gay Baker and a brother, Charles Daniel Baker.

He retired from E.L. Hamm & Associates as a Comptroller/Vice President. John had numerous careers along his 94 years that shaped his life. He began working at NN Free’s Store as a youth. He often said it was there he learned about dealing with different people. Also in Nokesville, he helped at his father’s sawmill working with the horses. After the Army, while working on his Bachelor’s Degree, he went to work at Trailways as a Coach Operator. He then went into government contracting working for Aerospatiale, Howard Research, which later became Control Data Corporation. He also worked for Milcom Systems. Upon retirement, John maintained a Real Estate License and enjoyed negotiating contracts.

Mr. Baker was a US Army veteran and a 32* Mason of Henry Knox Field Lodge 349. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Khedive Shrine Club, and past Captain of the Motor Corps. He was a member of the Cape Henry Model A Club in Virginia Beach. He also was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, VA for 60+ years.

John was often seen taking his daily walk in Chesopeian Colony where he loved chatting with neighbors. His positive attitude, good health, and witty sharp mind at a ripe age was an inspiration to all. He loved the outdoors and his favorite place to be was in the woods enjoying nature on his 4-wheeler checking on the pear tree.

He is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Anne Baker (Mark Williams) of Chesapeake, Jeanne Catherine Baker (Scott) and Nancy Baker Norman; son Henry Carson Baker (Sharon) of all Virginia Beach; grandchildren, John Carson Legros, Shayne Baker Patrick, Jade Baker Marsh, Jewel Baker DeLine, Johnnie Baker, Golda Norman and Emily Norman; great grandchildren, Lindsey Legros, Piper Marsh and Ezra Norman.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00PM Friday, October 27, 2023, at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange with internment in North Pamunkey Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service, 12 to 1PM at the funeral home. A Memorial Service will also be held in Virginia Beach on Friday, November 3, 2023, at King’s Grant Baptist Church at 1:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
