Karen Sue Byrd

Karen Sue Byrd, 71, of Charlottesville, passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, surrounded by family.Karen was born July 9, 1953 in Columbus, Ohio. She was the second to youngest of six children and spent her childhood on her family’s farm. She graduated from Olentangy High School in 1971 and went on to pursue an Associate’s Degree.Karen was a caring wife, sister, friend and mother. She was the engine of the family of four children: the planner, the coordinator, the caregiver. She never missed a sporting event, a band recital, nor a family dinner. Her love and support for her family was unyielding, and her family are forever grateful for her devotion. When her four children grew up, Karen was a loving and nurturing grandmother to her seven grandchildren. She thrived in the role of the caretaker for a second generation. She loved with her whole heart, and the dedication to her family and friends will never be forgotten.She instilled a deep sense of tradition through her love of holidays and the rituals that came with them. She passed along family recipes to her children, who remember her passion for baking and cooking. Karen loved the beach, where many memories are still rooted, and their summer family vacations to the beach were cherished by all fortunate enough to attend.Karen had a fulfilling 20-year career at the University of Virginia as an administrative assistant. She enjoyed being a part of the University community and getting to work on the lawn for many years. She was active in the community, giving her time and energy to those who needed it. She worshiped at the Church of the Incarnation, served dinners at the Salvation Army, and volunteered with a number of civic organizations. She instilled in her family a pride of service, and her legacy will be one of selflessness.Karen is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Dale A. Byrd of Charlottesville, Va., son Jason M. (Tina) Byrd, daughters Lisa M. (Charlie) Fry, Shannon M. (Hunter) Price and Caitlin E. (Kevin) Schafer. Seven grandchildren Ayden, Maeve, Piper, Mason, Ryker, Anson and Cormac. Brothers Thomas (Marguerite) Murtaugh, David Murtaugh and sisters Cathie (Bob) Parrish and Betsy (Kelly) Baldwin. In addition to many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother Rick Murtaugh and parents Thomas and Josephine (Ring) Murtaugh.Karen’s family wants to thank Commonwise Home Care of Charlottesville and Hospice of the Piedmont for Karen’s care over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.A visitation will be held Tuesday July 30, 2024 from 6-8pm at Teague Funeral Home. Followed by a Catholic funeral Mass at Church of the Incarnation July 31, 2024 at 10am.
