Louise Maher
Louise Maher, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on August 2, 2023, at The Colonnades, where she lived independently for 16 years.
She was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1924, the daughter of the late Alma Winkler, of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Kurt Winkler, of Farmingdale, Long Island, New York.
She was predeceased by her husband, William P. Maher, of Charlottesville, Virginia, brother-in-law Martin Maher, of Bradenton, Florida, and sister-in-law Margaret Maher, of Chatham, New Jersey.
She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Maher McCracken, of Galway, Ireland, son-in-law Martin McCracken, also of Galway, Ireland, granddaughter Krista Sherlock, of Cheshire, England, and grandson Jimmy Ray, of Wales, United Kingdom.
Louise retired from the New York Municipal Civil Service Commission as an administrative assistant where she was employed from 1944 – 1961, served in the Air Force Reserve at Mitchell Air Force Base, 514th Troop Carrier Wing, Garden City, Long Island, New York, from 1956 – 1961, and attended City College of New York City.
She was a member of the Sacagawea Garden Club of Charlottesville, Virginia; Women’s Club of Charlottesville, Virginia; Doe Club of Elks Lodge #389; and Senior Center.
Louise was an avid reader, sports enthusiast, and devoted UVA fan. She enjoyed music, gardening, theater, needlework and traveling – mostly enjoying her yearly trips to Ireland to visit Joyce and her family.
