Martha Jane Kline Chaplin, “Marty”, died in her sleep Saturday, Sept. 14, at her beloved home in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a long decline that she faced with dignity and her customary determination. She was 95. Marty was pre-deceased by Harvey, her husband of 65 years. She is survived by her two children, Pete Chaplin and Jane Jones, their spouses, seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for Thursday October 24 at 10:00am, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ivy, Virginia. A reception in the parish hall will follow immediately afterward.Marty was an only child, born on June 18, 1929 to Ora and Edward Kline in Adrian, West Virginia. She graduated with a teaching degree from Mary Baldwin College and accepted a job teaching primary school in Alexandria VA. There she met a tall, lanky, shy, brilliant young engineer named Harvey Chaplin and a storybook romance began. Marty and Harvey were married in 1954 and moved to Arlington VA to begin their life, later moving to McLean VA to raise their family. They found a church family at St. John’s Episcopal in Georgetown until they retired to Charlottesville and adopted St. Paul’s Ivy as their new church home. She was a treasure and we will always cherish her. In lieu of flowers, please make gifts and memorials in Marty’s honor to St. Paul’s Ivy Episcopal Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church – Georgetown, or the charity of your choice. Blessings to you all for your outreach and prayers. Thank you.
