Mary-Moore Grove

Mary-Moore Grove died on Friday, September 29, 2023. Born on August 30, 1959, she lived in Charlottesville for most of her life. She is survived by her mother, Margaret McLaughlin Grove; her brother, John McLaughlin Grove, his wife Katharine, and their children, Anna and Charlie Bateman of the Boston, MA area. She is also survived by many devoted cousins, as well as three faithful and loyal friends: Lindsay Mead Lowdon, Jenny Mead, and Chris Shaw.

She is preceded in death by her devoted father, the late James Weldon Grove; an infant brother; two beloved aunts and their spouses, Mary Grove Boylan and Bill, and Addie-Noble McLaughlin Ours and George; a loving uncle, William Lowndes McLaughlin and his wife, Nancy.

Mary-Moore attended local public schools and spent several years at a Devereux School near Philadelphia, PA. She was a charter member of Blue Ridge House under the care of Region Ten. A life-long member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, as a youth she enjoyed the youth choir and Sunday School. As an adult, she benefited from the loving care of Tosya Kugler and Sarah Graham, manager of “Just A Little Help."

In her last months, she was given devoted care at Cedars Healthcare Center. Despite many health setbacks, Mary-Moore continued to have an inquisitive mind and a keen sense of humor. A friend once said of her: “Don’t ask her the question if you are not ready for the answer!" Another friend said: “She was admired for her frankness & independence. She was her own person and challenged those around her to be the best of all times."

Interment will be private at her church’s Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the SPCA, Box 7047, Charlottesville, 22906, Botanical Garden of Piedmont, PO Box 6224, Charlottesville, 22906, or the charity of one’s choice. Also, express kind words to whomever needs them.
