Peter Lock Martin

August 19, 1981 - February 17, 2025

It is with profound sorrow we announce the passing of Peter "Pete the Sweet" Martin, beloved husband, father, son, brother, nephew and friend, who left us too soon on February 17, 2025. Born on August 19, 1981, to Mary Jean and Michael Martin, Pete was a beacon of love, support, and dedication to those fortunate enough to know him.

Pete leaves behind his loving wife, Megan Martin, and their two precious daughters, Emilia and McKenna Martin, who were his pride and joy. He is also survived by his Father, Michael Martin, his Mother, Mary Jean Martin, his Sister, Kate Martin Taylor (and husband Joshua Taylor), his Brother, Casey Martin (and wife Amanda Lewis Martin), and his Grandmother, Virginia Lock. Pete was predeceased by his grandfathers, C. Hugh Martin Jr., Andrew Lock, and grandmother, Nancy Ford Martin.

After graduating from the University of New Hampshire with dual degrees in Mathematical Economics and Political Science in 2004, Pete proudly took a short detour as a self-proclaimed "ski bum" in Breckenridge, Colorado and college instructor in Dalian, China. He then obtained his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) credentials and had an illustrious career in the financial sector. His professional journey included Standard & Poor's, Wells Fargo, HSBC, and ultimately Santander Bank, where he served as their Head of Credit Monitoring and Transformation.

While Pete found success in his professional life, he also found fulfillment in giving back to his community. He volunteered as a coach through McLean Youth Basketball and Virginia Basketball Academy, and regularly supported his wife in her volunteer and professional efforts in public health, at community mental health organizations and at their local elementary school. Pete’s kindness and generosity also extended beyond his community to all those who crossed his path. If anyone was in financial or emotional need (or simply needed a shelf installed), he was by their side to offer his support.

Pete's love for the mountains and skiing (or anything that involved an adrenaline rush) was widely known. There wasn't a skier he met that didn't receive an invitation to join him for some "runs". Whether it was on the slopes, hiking, biking, playing basketball with his children or throwing balls around with his beloved labs, he found tremendous joy in leading an active lifestyle. He also loved to just kick back with a glass of wine, music and good company.

Pete's legacy is one of kindness, sharp wit, morality and loyalty. Described as selfless, brilliant and hard-working, Pete was a man who prioritized his role as a provider yet believed in not sweating the small stuff and in living each day with laughter. Nicknamed "Skillz" in college, he was naturally good at almost everything he tried -- and put in the work when he wasn't. However, his greatest accomplishment, as he would often say, were his two beautiful girls -- each of whom possess his greatest qualities and will undoubtedly carry on his legacy.

A public vigil, which will be open to all community members, family and friends, will be held at Henley Middle School in Crozet, Virginia, at 7pm on Friday, February 28, 2025, and will be followed by private memorial services on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a foundation which is being established in Pete's honor and to protect the community he loved. The foundation will support community mental health and gun violence prevention in the Western Albemarle area. Its mission will include multi-sector grants to expand access to mental health care, enhance existing mental health and gun violence policies, and enhance school-based safety measures.
