Dr. Shambhu Dayal Varma, 89, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Uttar Pradesh, India, Dr. Varma developed a deep passion for science and education early in life. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Allahabad in 1955, followed by a Master of Science in Chemistry in 1957. In 1964, he completed his PhD at the University of Rajasthan, focusing on Biochemistry.
In 1968, seeking broader opportunities, Dr. Varma moved to the United States with his family. He began his career as a visiting professor at Oakland University. Dr. Varma went on to enjoy a distinguished academic career, holding positions at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the University of Maryland. For over four decades, he served as a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland Medical School.
Dr. Varma made significant contributions to the fields researching oxidative stress, cataract pathogenesis, and the protective effects of caffeine on oxidative stress-induced damage, publishing more than 130 research articles. His work was widely respected, earning him the Humboldt Research Award, and he was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus by the University of Maryland.
Dr. Varma is survived by his dedicated wife of more than 60 years, Mithilesh Varma. He is also survived by his three sons, Shalendra, Vivek, and Navin; six grandchildren, Saurabh, Ross, Archana, Isha, Shaunak, and Neha; and three great-grandchildren, Nikhil, Anjali, and Veer.
Dr. Varma will be fondly remembered for his playful spirit, his signature fashionable hats, and his unwavering dedication to both his career and his family. He leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, kindness, and love, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
