Sherman "Bud" Halcomb Snead

June 30, 1931 - July 18, 2023

Sherman “Bud” Halcomb Snead, 92 of Keswick, Virginia, passed peacefully on July 18, 2023, at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, in Charlottesville, Virginia following a stroke.

He was born June 30, 1931, to his parents, Jesse James Snead and Gallie Lee Campbell, who resided at Massie’s Mill, Nelson County, Virginia at the time. He was the youngest of ten children. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by sisters, Mary, Gladys, Virginia, Mamie and Erma; brothers, Jesse Willard, Carl, and Thomas; his wife of 49 years, Nancy Mae Morris Snead, who passed three and a half years ago, and his first wife and son’s mother, Ruby Collins Gunter.

He leaves behind son, Michael A. Snead; and his children, Jennifer L. Franklin, Lanserr A. Snead and Sherman H. Snead, II; son, Ronald D. Snead and wife Cheryl; and his son, Travis D. Snead and wife Susan, of Baltimore, Maryland; great-grandchildren, Brianna, Ruby Rose, Jackson, Gyspy, Riley, Ayumi, and Ella; sister, Maria Proffitt; former daughters-in-law, who have remained close to Bud, Monika Snead, Elaine Helmick, and Vickie Thomas of Charlottesville, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

Coming from a large family of humble means Bud developed a serious work ethic, which we believe was instilled in him by his mother, Gallie, that he passed onto his sons. He worked as a telephone cable splicer, and independent satellite TV installer, well into his eighties when Nancy retired him by refusing to renew his business license. For many years he owned a boat and loved pulling family and friends on water skis at Lake Monticello. He loved country music, dancing, and playing cards. He enjoyed having people around, having a good time and had a great laugh, which we will all miss. Bud and Nancy were active members of Rivanna Baptist Church (Woolen Mills Chapel) and enjoyed helping with church dinners, hosting summer picnics and baptisms in their family pool. While our hearts are aching that he has moved on, we have all been blessed by the many years he has shown us what it is to live, love, and laugh.

The family will receive friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville, Virginia on Monday, July 24, 2023 at 1 p.m., with funeral services immediately following at 2 p.m. conducted by Pastor Larry Wingfield. Interment to follow at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Rivanna Baptist Church, c/o Larry Wingfield, 2322 Tarleton Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901 or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911 are appreciated.
