Sibyl Burton Johnson

Sibyl Burton Johnson, 89, of Orange died on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the Dogwood Village of Orange. 

She was born on November 19, 1934, in Fluvanna County, and was the daughter of the late John “Jack” Clifton Burton and Adele Melton Burton.  She is also predeceased by her husband, Gordon I. Johnson; a son in law Steve Shifflett; a brother Cye D. Burton; two sisters, Orene B. Coffman and Chris B. Wright; and three brothers-in-law, Mack Coffman, Paul Wright, and Dennis Emerson.

Sibyl was a member of the Orange Baptist Church and retired from the banking business after many years.  She also retired from the Piedmont Virginia Community College after serving many years as the college cashier.

Sibyl is survived by a daughter Teresa Kay Johnson Shifflett of Unionville; two sons Michael L. Johnson and wife Lois of Gordonsville and Richard W. Johnson of Zion Crossroads; nine grandchildren Heather Johnson Tidwell, Christopher Johnson, Chap Johnson, Jenny Hall, John Shifflett, Ben Shifflett, Zachary Johnson, Chad Lawson, and Travis Lawson; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one brother John F. Burton of Orange; one sister Bonnie B. Emerson of Gloucester; a brother-in-law Elwood Johnson and wife Pat of Charlottesville; a sister-in-law June Johnson of Gordonsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at the Orange Baptist Church with interment in the Graham Cemetery, Orange.  Rev. Alan Miller will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 at the church.  Preddy Funeral Home of Orange is assisting the family.
