Sivasankaran “Sri” Srikanth

Sivasankaran “Sri” Srikanth, aged 72, passed away in Charlottesville, Virginia on July 22, 2023. Born in Thuckalay, Tamil Nadu, India, Sri graduated from the College of Engineers Guindy in Chennai, India with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1972 and subsequently trained at the Indian Institute of Technology. Sri later immigrated to the United States to attend The Ohio State University where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1984. Sri worked for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) for almost 40 years and held Emeritus Scientist status following his 2022 retirement. An accomplished scientist, Sri invented, designed, and built state-of-the-art receiver technologies used in NRAO telescopes around the world, enabling new discoveries and broadening our understanding of the universe.

Sri was known and beloved for his intellectual brilliance, his mischievous sense of humor, his charming smile, his passion for running and tennis, his love of music, especially classic American rock, his impeccable style, his zest for travel, his longstanding friendships, and his deep appreciation for a good glass of red wine. But above all things, Sri was known for his love of and devotion to his family especially his wife of 46 years, Vijayam Srikanth, his daughter Sushmita Srikanth, his son Shivshankar Srikanth, his daughter-in-law Jennifer Casto, and his beloved granddaughter Vivian Devi Srikanth. Sri was preceded in death by his father Kanthimathinathan Sivasankaran and his mother Veeralakshmi Annanthampillai.

A memorial will take place at Teague Funeral Service in Charlottesville, Virginia on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 12:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Sri’s life may make a donation to The Ohio State University College of Engineering Minority Engineering Program Scholarship Fund.
