Thelma Thurston
Thelma Matney Thurston, 79, of Staunton, Virgnia passed away peacefully on December 6, 2023. She was born in Grundy, Virginia to Bascome and Rosa Carter Matney. As a young child, they relocated to Fluvanna County, where they made their lifelong family home. Thelma and her two brothers, Bob and Carl, enjoyed a happy childhood surrounded by extended family and were a part of Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church where her foundation of faith began. She loved to sing and participated in church and community choirs any time she had the opportunity. During her high school years, she met Howard, a wonderful young man who became the love of her life. They married on June 14, 1963, and began a 61-year marriage that included a daughter, Laura Thurston Matheny and one son, Howard Scott Thurston. They shared three beautiful and treasured granddaughters, Alexandra Matheny Barlow, Lauren Thurston, and Olivia Thurston, one great-granddaughter, Emersyn Barlow and a close and treasured niece, Janet Rice. Together, Howard and Thelma built a family business that they ran successfully together until their retirement in 2022. They enjoyed traveling, camping, beach and river trips and spending time surrounded by treasured family and friends. Thelma offered her genuine southern hospitality to all of those who entered her home, and she loved taking care of others. Thelma’s love of God led her to Bethel Baptist Church in Fluvanna, which became her Church home for more than 40 years. There, she served as Choir Director sharing her love of music and her faith with the community through her dedicated work with the WMU. Her local mission work with the WMU supported efforts to donate to children's projects, the local pregnancy center, summer bible school, music programs and many meals prepared with love and purpose for those in the community. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and her beloved son, Scott. She leaves behind her husband and soulmate, Howard, her daughter, granddaughters, great granddaughter, many dearly loved family members and treasured friends. She leaves a legacy of love, caring, protection, dedication and so many warm memories that will sustain and be cherished by those who knew and loved her. They are comforted by knowing that she is with her Lord and Savior and are thankful for his love and mercy. A celebration honoring her life will be held at Teague Funeral Home’s Chapel on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at 2260 Ivy Rd, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903.
