Victor (Vic) John Kim

December 15, 1969 - March 19, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Victor (Vic) John Kim on March 19, 2025, at the age of 55.

Vic was born on December 15, 1969 and grew up in Uniontown, PA, a small town south of Pittsburgh. From a young age, Vic developed a passion for hockey, often playing pick-up games of street hockey in the neighborhood until late at night. His love for the sport grew even stronger when he discovered the Pittsburgh Penguins, becoming a dedicated superfan.

Vic was an enthusiastic collector with a wide range of interests, from ancient coins to hockey cards and historic war figurines. His knowledge of these subjects was encyclopedic, and friends often encouraged him to try out for Jeopardy.

His passion for military history led him to serve in the US Navy from 1989 to 1993, followed by four years in the reserves. During his service, he fought in the Gulf War aboard the USS Wisconsin battleship. Vic was awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal with a Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, and a Letter of Commendation for his dedication and bravery. His military service allowed him to explore the world and amass an impressive collection of pins and trinkets from his adventures.

After his Navy service, Vic's travels continued as he lived in Vancouver, New Jersey, and Boston before settling in Charlottesville. He was known for wearing his signature naval hat, adorned with colorful pins from around the world, each with a story behind it.

Vic was a humble, authentic, and generous individual, open to everyone he met. He was a gentle soul with an ever-youthful spirit, always ready with a giggle and a smile.

Vic is survived and celebrated by his mother, Kelly Jung Ja Kim; his brother, Walter Kim, and wife, Toni Kim; his sister, Liz Kim Ha, and husband, Eric Ha; and his nephews and nieces, Nathan and Naomi Kim, and Bethany, Ainsley, and Elliott Ha.

A service to honor Vic's life will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3101 Fontaine Avenue Extended, in Charlottesville, VA, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to support Trinity's mercy fund.
